Safer roads, safer lives: PIARC launches Road Safety Thematic Week – June 23–27, 2025

Road safety is a shared responsibility and a global priority. From June 23 to 27, 2025, PIARC is organising a Road Safety Thematic Week, showcasing its strong and ongoing commitment to improving road safety worldwide, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). This week brings together the latest knowledge, tools, and thought leadership to support all road stakeholders in building safer, more resilient road systems
New edition of PIARC’s Road Safety Manual (RSM)

A key feature of the week is the launch of the fourth edition of PIARC’s Road Safety Manual (RSM). This comprehensive and user-friendly resource:
- Supports countries at all stages of infrastructure development.
- Aligns with the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021–2030, focusing on:
▪️ Pillar 1: Multimodal transport and land use planning
▪️ Pillar 2: Safe road infrastructure
▪️ Pillar 4: Safe road use
- Promotes the Safe System approach, emphasizing shared responsibility and designing road systems that accommodate human error and protect vulnerable users.
- Features new technical additions offering a comprehensive set of updated resources, based on the earlier 2003 edition.

In addition to new content, PIARC offers a wide array of existing road safety resources, including:
- Practical guidance for Low and Middle-Income Countries: This report addresses infrastructure design, vehicle safety, speed management, and human behavior. It was developed with the Road Safety Knowledge Exchange Project, together with NTUA and AIT.

World Road Congress in Prague, including:

▪️ Sessions such as “Safe designs and speeds for active mobility”, “Mobilising investments and partnerships to deliver impact in road safety” and “Boosting Sustainable Road Safety Solutions in LMICs”
▪️ Award-winning case study by Ramiro Martínez Rodríguez on road management systems under adverse weather conditions (PIARC Road Safety Prize, supported by the USA). - Collaboration with the UN Road Safety Fund on initiatives like the “Ten Step Plan Pilot” in Tanzania.
