International Seminar "Rehabilitation and Sustainable Technology in Bridges"

19-21 April, Campeche (Mexico)

This international seminar was organized by Mexican Association of Land and Road Engineering (AMIVTAC), State Government of Campeche and the PIARC Technical committee D.3 "Bridges". It allowed to discuss topics related to the conservation and rehabilitation of bridges as well as the use of sustainable technologies in engineering and bridge construction.

There were more than 590 participants among which there were 26 speakers, 17 moderators, 119 students, 354 engineers and 74 exhibitors, with 32 commercial exhibitions from consultant companies and construction companies.

Summary of the Seminar

There were wide range of presentations including design and construction of new and special bridges, seismic design, new technologies and materials, environment effect of bridges, bridge management with durability issues, bridge rehabilitation, bridge monitoring and load posting. Most of the participants agreed that the seminar provided a good opportunity to exchange knowledge and experience among different countries in order to keep and produce good infrastructures. Based on the round table discussions at the end of two day sessions, it was confirmed as follows:

  • Information of new technologies and materials used in other countries can be very useful to advance new investigations,
  • Monitoring and inspection of bridges are very important for the sustainable development of every country, therefore, it is important to consider easy access methods during the bridge design stage,
  • Even if earthquake effect is not completely understood, it should be prepared against earthquakes in order to prevent disasters,
  • Different bridge construction methods can be found around the world.

As a complement to the technical program, the seminar included a technical visit to the construction of the "La Unidad" bridge in Campeche that will be built with the most modern engineering and durable materials. This bridge will provide more safety and security to more than 4,200 vehicles crossing a day. The bridge is made of 73 spans with each span of 45 meters in length and supported by 72 substructures with 564 piles. The new bridge will replace the existing bridge built more than thirty years ago.
