PIARC (World Road Association), founded in 1909 and comprising 125 member governments from all over the world, is the global forum for exchange of knowledge and experience on roads, road transport policies and practices. With consultative status to the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations, the Association is contributing to a stable and sustainable global development of the road and transport sector.

4.2 Bridges

The subject of resilience also plays a major role in the field of Bridges. Here, the focus is on questions of adaptation to the consequences of climate change and on improving the resilience of bridges in the case of seismic events. In addition, Technical Committee 4.2 "Bridges" will work on the further development of procedures and methods for bridge inspections and the implementation of these new technologies within bridge management systems. Lessons learnt from forensic engineering of bridge collapses will also be considered. Additionally, the use of innovative construction materials for the repair of ageing bridges will be addressed. (extract from the Strategic Plan)

Interview with Kiyohiro Imai

Technical Committee 4.2 "Bridges" Chair

With more than 33 years of experience in the road industry, Kiyohiro Imai (Japan), civil engineer, deputy senior director of the planning department of a major Japanese company, is very involved in the Association. He was a member of the PIARC Technical Committee "Road Bridges" during the 2012-2015 cycle. Kiyohiro was appointed Chair of the "Bridges" Committee for the 2016-2019 cycle and is again Chair for the 2020-2023 cycle.

Interviewed during the meetings to launch this cycle in February 2020 in Marne-la-Vallée (France), Kiyohiro explains the objectives of the 4.2 "Bridges" committee.
