Work Zone Safety and Management: Culture & Assurance

Registration is now open for the sixth and final session of the PIARC Road Academy’s “Work Zone Safety and Management” training course, dedicated to Culture & Assurance. The session will take place on 17 November 2026.

This session looks at what it takes to put the topics covered throughout the course into practice. It examines how organisations can move from a culture of compliance, based on ticking boxes, to a culture of competence, where decisions are informed and risk-based.

Participants will look at mature assurance systems, audit approaches that genuinely change behaviours, the role of competency frameworks and third-party accreditation, and ways to build continuous improvement. The session closes by connecting all six topics to the course’s Integrated Framework and offering practical takeaways.

What will you learn?

By the end of the session, participants will be able to:

  • Distinguish between compliance-based and competence-based safety cultures
  • Design assurance programmes that focus on leading indicators and drive real improvement
  • Understand the role of competency frameworks and third-party accreditation
  • Apply the concept of being an intelligent buyer of work zone safety services
  • Develop a personal or organisational action plan using the Maturity Assessment Tool

An engaging and pratical session

The training includes interactive activities, live discussions, and practical exercises:

  • Audit scenario: participants review audit findings from a fictional worksite and use polling to decide which are compliance issues and which are genuine risk issues, before a group debrief.
  • Competency self-assessment: a short poll covering five core competency areas lets participants compare their own profile with the group average.
  • Maturity reassessment: participants retake the maturity poll from the first webinar to see how their understanding has evolved over the series.
  • Personal action plan: a five-minute exercise to identify three actions to take in the next 90 days, with volunteers sharing one in the chat.
  • Series wrap-up Q&A: an open discussion with the presenters and, where available, members of the original PIARC Project Oversight Team.

>> Sessions are delivered online at 08:00 UTC and 15:00 UTC.
