PIARC Road Academy expands its Work Zone Safety and Management course with a new session on Technology & Data
Published on 5 October 2026
PIARC Road Academy continues to expand its training programme with a new session for road professionals. On 13 October 2026, the fifth session of the Work Zone Safety and Management course will focus on the role of technology and data in managing safer and more efficient work zones.
Work Zone Safety and Management: Technology & Data
Registration is now open for the fifth session of the PIARC Road Academy's "Work Zone Safety and Management" training course, focused on the theme of Technology & Data. The session will take place on 13 October 2026.
This session will explore how technology and data can support better work zone management, while also considering the importance of having the right governance and processes in place. It will look at how to assess and procure technology based on evidence of risk reduction, rather than relying solely on vendor claims.
Attendees will learn about the digital baseline (the minimum data needed to support work zone management), the role of ITS, and how to set performance criteria to hold suppliers accountable. The session contrasts high-cost hardware in wealthy countries with effective low-cost analytics in developing settings, and explains what each can learn from the other.
What will you learn?
- Assess technology claims using the evidence hierarchy developed through the project
- Understand the concept of a digital worksite baseline and minimum data feed
- Set performance criteria for ITS and connected work zone technology
- Distinguish between technology that treats symptoms and technology that manages risk
- Identify context-appropriate technology options for their own jurisdiction
An engaging and pratical session
The training includes interactive activities, live discussions, and real case studies to connect theory with practice, including a vendor pitch challenge, a technology readiness poll, a data standard exercise, and a cost–benefit quiz:
- Vendor pitch challenge: Two mock technology sales pitches are presented (one evidence-based, one hype-heavy). Attendees vote on which they would fund, and the facilitator deconstructs both using the report's evidence criteria
- Technology readiness poll: Attendees answer a quick poll on what digital systems their organisation currently uses for work zone management (e.g., booking platforms, real-time feeds, none). Results are aggregated live
- Data standard exercise: Attendees are shown a sample minimum data specification and asked (via chat or annotation) what fields they would add or remove for their context. Responses are discussed
- Cost–benefit quiz: A set of technology investments are presented with their costs. Attendees rank them by expected risk reduction, then see how the evidence compares with their intuition
>> Sessions are delivered online at 08:00 UTC and 15:00 UTC.
