Join the next PIARC Road Academy session: Planning & Design: Managing Risk at the Source, this August
Published on 29 July 2026
Discover how the lowest total risk philosophy and the hierarchy of controls can support better decision-making throughout a project's lifecycle, with practical insights and international experience.
Registration is now open for the third session of the PIARC Road Academy's "Work Zone Safety and Management" training course, which focuses on Planning and Design: Managing Risk at the Source.
The third session will begin on 25 August 2026 as part of the PIARC Road Academy programme, which features monthly training sessions through November 2026.
Courses are delivered in English, French and Spanish, with additional language support available.
Why attend?
This interactive 90-minute session explores how effective planning and design can reduce risks before work begins by applying the lowest total risk approach throughout the project lifecycle.
Participants will learn how to design inherently safer work zones by eliminating hazards at the source, implementing temporary controls for temporary risks, and assessing the potential risks introduced by safety measures themselves. The session also examines key aspects of on-site implementation, including adaptive management and maintaining the integrity of safety plans during project delivery.
Designed for road authorities, engineers, designers, contractors and project managers, this session provides practical tools, internationally recognised good practices and actionable insights that participants can apply to enhance work zone safety in their own projects.
What will you learn?
By attending this session, participants will be able to:
- Integrate the lowest total risk approach into planning and design decisions to create safer work zones from the outset
- Identify how design choices made early in a project can influence safety performance throughout its lifecycle
- Apply the hierarchy of controls to eliminate hazards at the source and develop more effective risk mitigation strategies
- Recognise the difference between addressing the consequences of risk and proactively managing its underlying causes
- Adopt practical methods for adapting to changes during project delivery while ensuring safety plans remain effective
An engaging and pratical session
The training includes interactive activities, live discussions, and real case studies to connect theory with practice.
Participants will also be able to draw on international experience to enhance their practices and benefit from practical resources to facilitate implementation in their own context.
The session will be delivered online at:
- 08:00 UTC
- 15:00 UTC
