Share your ideas to decarbonise roads and achieve carbon neutrality
Published on 15 May 2025
PIARC invites you to take part in two new surveys on road decarbonisation and carbon neutrality. Your input will help shape future strategies and innovations.
1. Survey by the Technical Committee 3.5 – Carbon neutrality
The recognition of climate change's irreversible effects has led to global support for reducing carbon emissions in all sectors, including the road sector. However, as efficient transport is vital for economic growth, emission reduction efforts must not hinder road infrastructure development, particularly in low- and middle-income countries
The PIARC Technical Committee 3.5 “Road infrastructure for road transport decarbonisation” is launching a survey with the aim of obtaining some initial data on road administration plans to achieve carbon neutrality.
About the survey
The survey covers the topics of achieving net zero carbon emissions, balancing carbon emissions by offsetting emissions, implementing electric road systems, and developing positive energy roadways.
The results of the survey will be used to produce a technical report including recommendations to achieve carbon neutrality. The final report will be available once the study is concluded.
Who should participate
We expect input from road and transport authorities, road operators, and experts from consultancy companies and universities.
How to submit your answers
Please submit your answers by filling in the word document and send it by email to james.grenfell@ntro.org.au
Estimated completion time: approximately 45-60 minutes.
Deadline
Your answers should be submitted by Monday, 7th July 2025
2. Survey by the Technical Committee 4.5 – New Technologies for the Measurement and Monitoring of Road Decarbonisation Initiative and Carbon Calculators
The PIARC Technical Committee 4.5 “Decarbonisation of road construction and road maintenance” has started a survey concerning the status of new technologies for measuring and monitoring the road decarbonisation initiative and carbon calculators.
To understand technological developments, including existing carbon calculation tools, you are invited to contribute to this international comparative study.
Survey objective and scope of the study
- Gather information on technological advances in decarbonisation
- Gather information on current carbon accounting practices
