Pavement damage has become increasingly frequent on expressways in Japan, primarily due to the growing impacts of climate change. In summer, ambient temperatures can exceed 40 °C, causing asphalt pavements to suffer from rutting and blistering. During winter, infiltrated water penetrates the pavement structure and undergoes repeated freeze-thaw cycles—freezing at night and thawing during the day.
