French Strategy for Developing Carpooling: a Combined Approach between Mobility Services and Transport InfrastructurePIARC Prize - Decarbonation
Transport is the activity that contributes most to France’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Various studies highlight that local journeys of less than 80 km are responsible for 70% of emissions, 80% of which occur in urban areas, and more specifically in the outskirts of metropolitan areas. This situation is the result of various factors: widespread urbanisation encouraged by car use, delays in the development of the rail network and low-density urban planning in the suburbs.
