Safer Car Drivers and Safer Roads Through a Data and Risk-Based Approach to Road Safety

In 2016 ANWB (Royal Dutch Touring Club) introduced the Drive Safe ‘pay how you drive’ car insurance. Our goals: offer a car insurance that is much better aligned with the actual risk of the insured driver and improve driving behaviour, which results in less accidents. In addition, supporting road authorities by providing driving behaviour data to increase road safety has been our goal from the start. In 2020 ANWB performed a pilot project with the municipality of Rotterdam. We improved the accident risk calculations of their machine learning model by providing aggregated and anonymous driver behaviour data from our Drive Safe insurance. Because of the successful results, a non-commercial data-service was launched in 2021 to support other road authorities in the same way.
