Many Asset Management Systems (AMS) have been in use for decades, their processes have been well-developed and they support the operational management and maintenance of road infrastructure. National Road Authorities (NRA) generate and collect asset information in various formats, and place and store it in considerable amounts in such systems. Building Information Modelling (BIM) has also become firmly established in the infrastructure sector in recent years. The process is designed to create, capture, maintain and effectively use asset information throughout the asset lifecycle. To make both systems more efficient, NRAs need to establish an effective way for information to flow between them; for AMS to be able to access and use data from BIM environments to make efficient and informed asset maintenance decisions, and for BIM to access and use operational data available in AMS to make it more useful in the operational phase of an asset.
