- Definition : 1. Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs [United Nations]. Note: the term emerged in 1980 in the World Conservation Strategy. It took pride of place in the 1987 United Nations Brundtland report to the World Commission on Environment and Development and was further sanctioned in 1992 by the United Nations Rio de Janeiro Conference on Environment and Development. The concept was developed in subsequent years and linked to a number of principles embracing the environment, the economy and society. In 1999, the integration of the social dimension as well as the initial environmental dimension resulted in a definition directed more towards the implementation of a number of principles conducive to the improvement of well-being, greater social justice and the preservation of ecosystems (see 2. below). 2. Triple dividend development which integrates the future of generations to-come into land use planning by insuring coherence between economic development, social progress, the environment, the heritage, cultural identities and solidarity.
