iterative approach

  • Language : PIARC Road Dictionary / English
  • Theme : Operations Transport Sustainable Transport
  • Definition : Approach based on a principle that can be described by the following repetitive sequence: 1. identification; 2. partial simultaneous operations concerning data collection, data analysis, draft solution development; 3. evaluation of the draft solution with regard to the goals and the initial objective; 4. setting a new improved objective; 5. repetition of steps 2, 3 and 4 to develop new (improved) draft solutions as many times as necessary; 6. storing, analysing and processing the necessary data; 7. delivering a final solution close to the expected goal. Note: an iterative approach applies when the problem can be defined, but the data are uncertain and their analysis does not lead directly to a solution because of extraneous factors. This kind of method is used for example for urban development plans and regulations or for drawing up a standard.
