  • Definition : Mode of identifying an item by machine (and entering the data automatically into a computer). Note: usually data is automatically input via a computer. The most widely used recognition technology, at present, is probably bar code; others include optical character recognition (OCR), magnetic ink character recognition (MICR), and radio frequency (RFID), machine vision, magnetic stripes and voice systems [EN 14943].
