The 10th Symposium on Pavement Surface Characteristics – SURF 2026 will take place in Tokyo, at Congrès Square Haneda, in 2026. This major international event is hosted by Japan Road Association and SURF 2026 Organizing Committee, co-hosted by Japan Road Contractors Association, co-organized by PIARC and by Japan Society of Civil Engineers, and sponsored by Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, Japan.
It will bring together the global pavement community to discuss the latest innovations, research findings, and emerging needs related to pavement surface characteristics.
In line with the PIARC’s mission to promote knowledge sharing worldwide, SURF 2026 will feature an exhibition, workshops, panel discussions, and technical sessions built on a refereed international call for papers. More than 150 participants are expected, including infrastructure owners and managers, researchers, academics, and industry experts.
We are pleased to announce that the Call for Abstracts has been extended to 31 December 2025. Researchers and professionals from all sectors involved in pavement design, construction, maintenance, surface monitoring, and technological innovation are invited to submit their work.

- AI-enabled Data-driven Decision Support
- Eco-Friendly Surfaces and Recycling Technologies
- Relationship between Functional and Structural Performance
- Surface Improvement with Innovative Materials
- Next-Generation Vehicles and Social Needs for Pavement Surface
- Cycle Path and Walkway Safety and Comfort
- History and Cultural Roles of Pavement Surface* *e.g. historical changes of surface properties in pavement technologies, relationship between social culture and pavement surface improvement

How to Submit
Abstracts should be submitted through the official SURF 2026 platform. The abstract should summarize the purpose, methodologies, results, and contributions of the study related to symposium theme and topics
- Abstracts should be 200–350 words in length.
- Provide 3–5 keywords for the paper.
- The official language of the symposium is English.
