PIARC Strategic Plan 2016-2019 confirms our mission to address the needs of low- and middle-income member countries, including those in the African continent. Taking part in this conference in Durban will contribute to this objective, along with other PIARC projects such as the two African Task Forces (ATF), on Geometric and Structural Design Standards for African Highways Network and on Updating Practical Rules of Pavement Design for French-speaking African Countries.

Regional Conference for Africa

Organized jointly by PIARC Technical Committee D.2 (Pavements), the Regional Conference for Africa has become the flagship road infrastructure event in Southern Africa and in 2018 will be strengthened by the participation of the International Road Federation (Washington D.C, USA) and the World Road Association (PIARC). This year, the theme of the conference is "Roads to Economic and Social Growth". Africa poses unique challenges for the provision and preservation of roads and road transport to meet a wide range of economic development and social welfare needs. The conference will help determine the needs of the road and formulate a way forward. This will include developing a convincing road financing policy and providing and maintaining an efficient, safe and affordable road network to meet the needs of a growing region.

PIARC Technical Director, Miguel Caso Flórez, explains why this seminar is so important:
