Whereas issues such as adaptability to climate change, carbon offsetting, sustainability, resilience, road safety, etc. concern road authorities across the globe, the lower- and middle-income countries face additional challenges in development/upgradation/management of road asset due to inadequate resources, complex sociological issues and inadequate capacity of construction/consulting firms as well as road authorities. Rapid Impact Assessment on National Road Networks 

Rapid Impact Assessment (RIA) is essential for highway authorities to respond swiftly and effectively to hazards. It enables timely damage data collection and sharing among emergency responders and infrastructure providers, ensuring informed decision-making. Without RIA, authorities risk acting in isolation and making poor decisions. Effective RIA depends on preparedness—established procedures, trained personnel, and ready systems—to ensure coordinated and informed emergency responses.

From 23 to 27 June, PIARC held its Road Safety Thematic Week, featuring new resources, key events and expert insights:

The 4th edition of the Road Safety Manual was released on this occasion, aligning with the UN Decade of Action and promoting a Safe System approach.

We published a new episode of PIARC podcast, which explores trends, challenges, and solutions with global experts on road safety. The podcast is available on several platforms: YouTube (with video and subtitles in English; French and Spanish coming soon), Spotify, Apple Podcast and Amazon Music.


PIARC also joined IBTTA's Global Road Safety Week with President Emanuela Stocchi speaking in a high-level webinar.

Driving the future of tunnels: PIARC’s International Seminar in China gathers global experts 

The landmark seminar themed "Tunnel Tech: Leading the Way Forward", organized by PIARC Technical Committee 4.4 “Tunnels” and CMCT with key support from NERCRT, TEB of CHTS and ITA brought together over 600 global tunnel professionals. It spotlighted resilience, smart innovation, and sustainability to mark the next step in advancing global collaboration in tunnel infrastructure.

This high-profile event fostered meaningful dialogue and cultural sharing between international and Chinese national experts, encouraged collaboration on the challenges and opportunities shaping the next generation of tunnel and underground engineering.

PIARC in action – Highlights from June 2025

In June 2025, PIARC continued its global technical engagement with key committee meetings focused on infrastructure resilience and design. The Technical Committee 1.4 convened in Bratislava (June 23–26) to address climate change and hazard-related challenges in road network planning, while Technical Committe 4.6 met in Atlanta on June 12 to discuss advancements in road design standards—both gatherings reinforcing PIARC’s commitment to sustainable and resilient road systems.

PIARC Technical Committee 4.2 “Bridges” organised a session entitled “International bridge forum by PIARC” at the Austroads Bridge Conference (ABC2025) on 27 June. The organisers of the conference marked this session as one of highlights at ABC2025, an event that brought together bridge professionals and experts from across Australia, New Zealand and the world.

International Symposium “Navigating the Future of Traffic Management” is taking place on 29 June – 3 July in Greece, Athens. On the margins of this symposium, the Technical Committee 2.4 "Road Network Operations and ITS for Sustainability" meeting is taking place on 3 and 4 July.

Road Tunnels Safety and Efficiency: the Italian Technological Excellence 

PIARC Italy, the Italian National Committee of PIARC, is organizing a public event in collaboration with Anas, the Italian National Road Authority. It will take place on July 3, from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., at the Faculty of Engineering of La Sapienza University in Rome.

This event will serve as a forum for exchange and support among professionals in the sector.

The initiative comes in the context of the upcoming deadline set by the European Commission, concerning the compliance of tunnels over 500 meters in length that are part of the Trans-European Road Network.
