As I have moved
deeper into my career I have long thought that the places I enjoyed working at
the most have been where the culture of the organisation has been welcoming,
fair and progressive. In such an environment you can see people flourish,
getting the opportunity to bring out the best in themselves, realising their
potential. The upside for the
organisation, the employer is that their staff, both individually and in teams
tend to be better engaged, effective in their work and as a consequence, [...] >>Read the full editorial

This issue
of Routes/Roads, devoted to the more environmentally friendly roads, is
based on contributions presented at the 27th World Road Congress, held in
Prague in October 2023. It focuses primarily on techniques for reducing the
carbon footprint of roads, both during construction and operation. For history
buffs, there is also an article presenting the 17 successive locations that
PIARC has held during its 114 years of existence.

This
high-impact summary presents key findings from PIARC’s Special Project on
Artificial Intelligence, highlighting AI’s transformative potential across all
phases of road infrastructure. It outlines major benefits—such as improved
safety, asset management, and traffic flow—as well as challenges like data
governance and workforce skills. The summary offers clear, actionable
recommendations tailored to different socio-economic contexts, helping
decision-makers prepare for AI integration by 2030. >> Read the High-Impact Summary Report here

Transport
modes don’t operate in isolation — they’re deeply interconnected. A disruption
in one part of the system can ripple across others, making the entire network
only as strong as its weakest link. With extreme weather events and other
system shocks occurring more frequently, mobility and supply chains are
increasingly at risk. Strengthening resilience isn’t just necessary at the
modal level — it must happen across the entire transport ecosystem.
This is why
PIARC is happy to join this event together with PIANC, UIC and Eurocontrol.

PIARC and PKD seek contributions from road administrators, engineers, researchers, contractors, and operators to share innovative solutions and best practices. Abstracts should align with three core themes: Planning and Design, Construction Technologies, or Safety and Operations. Submission deadline: 15 October 2025 (1000-word extended abstract format). This is your chance to influence international tunnel safety standards and operational practices.

In his inaugural speech, Mr. Gemme outlined that his goal was “to focus international attention on a number of highly topical issues that will be at the center of PIARC Italia’s work over the next years: the future of mobility with a priority on road safety, the digitalization of roads for both traffic control and infrastructure health monitoring, and best practices in road transport decarbonisation, including achieving the goal of sustainability with the necessary gradualness”. PIARC warmly congratulates Mr. Gemme on his appointment and wishes him every success in advancing collaboration on these high-priority topics.

Translation
of German technical regulation into English
Germany’s National Committee, FGSV, has translated this important
document. The Technical Delivery Conditions for Aggregates in
Road Construction (TL Gestein-StB) set clear requirements for
natural, industrially produced, and recycled aggregates used across a wide
range of road applications.
