Summary of the Workshop

From 5 to 8 April 2017, the World Road Association's Technical Committee C.1 "National road safety policies and programs" held its third meeting in Marrakech, Morocco. Hosted by the Moroccan Ministry of Equipment, Transport and Logistics (DR, CNPAC, DTRSR) and the Moroccan National Road Associations (AMPCR - AMR), the committee members spent four intensive days, dynamically working on progress and development of PIARC's Road Safety Manual.

On Thursday 6^th April 2017, an International Workshop on Policies and Programs for Road Safety Management ("Current Practice and Development Prospective") took place in the conference salon of Palm Plaza Hotel in Marrakech, jointly organized with Moroccan authorities.

As part of its road safety strategy, Morocco is working to strengthen coordination between the various ministerial policies on the issue of road safety and the promotion of cooperation with civil society which constitutes "a lever" as well as an essential partner for Morocco in its efforts to fight against traffic accidents. Within the framework of this strategy, Morocco is also working to strengthen cooperation with various international organizations and to create a National Road Safety Agency.

The International workshop on Road Safety, which brought together stakeholders at local and national level as well as international experts working on the subject, was a real example of this cooperation.

110 participants took the opportunity to follow and discuss various presentations, given by TC members and Moroccan speakers, on different topics in the field of Road Safety.

PIARC's twelve technical reports on Road Safety which had been produced during the previous cycle were presented, as well as the Road Safety Manual as a flagship product of the World Road Association. For the current cycle 2016-2019, six technical reports on Road Safety in progress were announced.

The last day of the Committee meeting was dedicated to a technical visit of National Road 9, liaising the cities of Marrakech and Ouarzazate. Carefully explained by the Moroccan engineers' team, the members of TC C.1 had the opportunity to look at some of the concrete steps in upgrading the safety of Moroccan roads as an example of a road crossing an environment both stunning and difficult.

The PIARC Technical Committee C.1 is deeply grateful to all Moroccan colleagues for hosting this meeting in Marrakech. Hospitality and capability to handle technical and logistic facts were outstanding. In this sense, TC C.1 Chair Roberto Arditi underlines: "I hope that ideas exchanged with PIARC international experts and our Road Safety Manual could be of concrete help in Morocco's future actions to save lives."
