PIARC (World Road Association), founded in 1909 and comprising 125 member governments from all over the world, is the global forum for exchange of knowledge and experience on roads, road transport policies and practices. With consultative status to the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations, the Association is contributing to a stable and sustainable global development of the road and transport sector.

Roads of Portugal

This issues of "Routes/Roads" intends to provide an overview of the road sector in Portugal, and the national road network in particular.In 1978, the length of the nationla road network was 18 800 km, which represented 40% of the classified network, an abnormally high percentage.

This fact, amongst others, led to the revision of the plan which was completed at the end of 1985.
