Air Velocities Permitted in Road Tunnels, and Other Requirements for a Safe Escape Route in Case of Fire

In The Netherlands tunnels are usually equipped with an escape gallery between tunnel tubes, to support evacuation in case of a tunnel fire and/or an incident involving dangerous goods. Overpressure ventilation prevents the smoke from entering the gallery, when emergency exit doors are opened. The article deals with the acceptable air velocity in the escape route and shows the results of tests organized with over a hundred test persons in an actual tunnel.
