Road safety manual
First Edition
The manual is organised into four parts:
- Part 1 is an introduction to road safety and provides an overview of the current road safety problem. It outlines the potential and the limitations of existing solutions;
- Part 2 presents the analysis process, it details all the steps to improve road safety, from data collection to the evaluation of implemented solutions;
- Part 3 explains in detail the relationship between the different components of the road and safety (horizontal alignment, vertical alignment, etc.).
- Part 4 describes all the steps necessary to carry out studies and technical surveys (sight distance, speeds, etc.)..
A CD-ROM was designed to complement the use of the printed version and contains various technical sheets and algorithms to determine safety levels in defined situations.
Printed versions are no longer available.
Plans for a second edition
The World Road Association has commenced work on a new edition of the Manual that will extend the scope of the document beyond the geometric design of road infrastructure.
This project was launched in 2011. It is managed by a task force of leading road safety experts. It is expected that the first elements of the Manual will be available in late 2012.
